Same 2x2in print spec is stated identically for passport and visa photos; stored here as the precise 50.8 x 50.8mm conversion rather than the commonly-rounded '51 x 51mm', so the exported pixel size lands exactly on 600 x 600px at 300 DPI. The 240KB ceiling and 300 PPI figure are from the DS-160 visa digital-image requirements page; the passport online-renewal upload page could not be reached directly to confirm whether the same numbers apply there, though third parties widely report they match. Photo must be within the last 6 months; no eyeglasses permitted.

How passport photo requirements work

Passport and visa photos are specified by head height, not just image size — a face that is too small or too large in the frame is one of the most common reasons a photo gets rejected, even when the print dimensions are correct. That is why each specification here carries a permitted head-height range as well as a print size.

Print resolution matters too. A photo that looks sharp on a phone screen can print blurry at passport size if it does not have enough pixels for 300 DPI — the standard most photo counters and government portals expect. This tool checks your source photo against the resolution the selected specification needs before doing any cropping.

What this tool cannot check: your expression, whether glasses cause glare, or whether a head covering meets a specific country's religious-exemption rules. Those are judged by the issuing authority, and no automated tool can guarantee acceptance.

Questions

What size is a passport photo? +

It depends on the country. India, the UK, Japan, Germany and most Schengen countries use 35 × 45mm. The US and Indian OCI/visa photos use 2 × 2in (51 × 51mm). Canada is an unusual 50 × 70mm. Choose your country and document from the specification list above to see the exact size and head-height range, each sourced from the issuing authority's own published guidance.

Why won't my iPhone photo upload? +

iPhones save photos as HEIC by default, a format no browser can open directly. Choose "Convert to JPEG" when picking the photo on your iPhone, or use the camera button on this page, which saves a JPEG automatically.

Does my photo leave my browser? +

No. The photo is decoded, cropped and exported entirely on your device. Nothing is uploaded to a server at any point.

Will this guarantee my photo is accepted? +

No. This tool helps you meet the published dimensions, but expression, lighting, glasses, head coverings and clothing are judged by the issuing authority and cannot be guaranteed by any tool.
